Colour me podcast 2½

Well all this podcast talk started when Rikke and me met for lunch, and started discussing podcasts, which ended up with her afterwards posting a blog about our talk and her favorite podcast .

This is where it gets a bit tricky. My boyfriend Peter read that post, and responded with his own podcast blog post, about how I was the one who listened to podcasts, but now Rikke had him hooked on her favorite podcast.

With all this podcast talk I had apparently instigated, I also wanted to write about podcasts, something that I use quite a lot of time listening to. But I got sick, just short after the blog posts was published, and then got stuck in a vacation home with almost no technology at my disposal, and just as little internet,  it had to wait until i got the time today.

So, without further ado, Colour me podcast 2½…

As Peter, I have choosen to call my post “colour me podcast”, courtesy of a “Peter Wørts”, who is a regular contributor to one of my favorite niche podcasts, “Noget om film”. He thought that colour me podcast would be the perfect name of a podcast, which main purpose was to rate other podcasts, and I agree, hence the name of this blog post (If I have not at this point implied it heavily enough, then the purpose of this post is to rate  and write about some of my favorite podcasts). And it is also fitting, now I have already mentioned it, to start off with Noget Om Films podcast.

1. “Noget om Film” (Something about movies)

NoM is a podcast in danish that was founded because some of the guys on www.gametest.dk got bored and decided to make a podcast about movies. It is a weekly podcast, and has almost from the beginning had Johannes and Peter Wørts and Mikkel Lodahl as the three regulars (Peter was a guest in the beginning because he didn’t want to take part in the project, but after a few episodes he forgot and became part of the regular cast). At the time of writing they have several others taking part, on a more or less regular basis, but the three “original gangsters” are the ones mentioned above. A normal podcast will be the regulars and who ever else have showed up, talking about one or two films, and rating them on a scale from 1 to 4 (If the film is rated 1, it will be rated according to another scale, worse or better than The incredible Hulk with Edward Norton…). They usually also watch new trailers and discuss them, before starting the talk about the movies they are going to rate.

It is fairly long podcast episodes (the longest I heard lasted over 4 hours),and has some segments that shows up regularly or when they are appropriate. These segments range from “Ask philosopher Mikkel Lodahl”*, “Tommy tests apps” (which is Tommy testing more or less useless apps on his windows phone) and “Reality update from J-dog” (this segment has had many names through the life of the podcast) and this is only to name a few…

My favorite episode is still their twilight special, called TwiHard MegaHard, where the three grown up men was forced to watch all the Twilight Saga movies, and trying to make any sense of them at all… If you are new to the podcast, and does not like to start at the beginning, then that episode is beyond brilliant (But all their specials are usually brilliant).

I love the podcast, but I will admit that it is probably an acquired taste, where it will become more and more fun, the more you listen to it. And finally it was this podcast in which, Mikkel Lodahl, when he got tired of Johannes Wørts complaints that he uttered:

”You may not throw rocks if you live in a hipster house…”**

2. “Fup I farvandet”  (Scam in the fairway <– according to google translate)

Fup I Farvandet, “FUP” in short, is a podcast by two Danish standup comedians. Mikkel Malmberg and Morten Wichmann, hosts the weekly podcast, which usually last about an hour, and is good for laughs and quirky ways to look at the world.

Every week they have a guest, who is a part of the Danish standup comedy scene in one way or another, and the guests can be both new up and coming standup comedians, or well-known seasoned players.

Their usual segments are “Guest time” which is where they talk to the guest about what they are doing right now, and what they have done the last year (often since last time they were on the show), and gives the guest a chance to talk about and promote what he/she is doing right now. They also have the segment “What’s up in your life”, which is a catch up on what has been happening the last week in Mikkel and Mortens lives. They also usually have the segment “Domain game”, which  basically is the hosts and the guest looking at which web domains has been discontinued, and trying to deduce from the name of the domain only, what was the point of the website in the first place, and why it got discontinued. They also have a segment in the show that is all about the mail they have gotten, paired with their newly purchased answering machine, makes this segment all about the listeners who have written or called in with questions, ideas or remarks of all kind.

Why should you listen to this? Well if you like the danish standup scene, well then this podcast is for you, you get lots of laughs, insider knowledge about what is going on in the Danish standup scene, and more or less embarrassing stories about all the standup comedians. If you do not give a damn about the Danish standup scene, well then this is not for you

3.  ”Det dystre skæg”  (The grim beard)

This podcast is very difficult to explain. On the surface, it looks just like FUP, since it is two standup comedians, trying to do a podcast. However, this is also, where the similarities ends. Two more dark minded standup comedians, Elias Ehlers and Martin Nørgaard, host the podcast. The podcast comes out, when they have time, which differs from weekly to montly to semi-monthly basis. They talk about everything, from world religions to Elias new kitchen. They usually talk about some of the things going on in the world, and have the tag line “We talk about the things, we do not know anything about”***. Usually it ends dark places, and with them giving an earful to the entire world for being so dumb/anti-social/stupid etc. With all this being said, the podcast has been their way to get a radio program for older children, so even though they have a dark outlook on the world, and can be perceived as taking everything a bit too serious, the largest radio distributor in the country apparently thought they would be suitable for children. This actually sums it up very well, and is the reason I love listening to the show. It is the rap that Martin Nørgaard has to do at the beginning of each show, that always goes wrong, it is the anecdotes from Elias Ehlers life in Holstebro, and just the feeling of being allowed inside the heads of Elias and Martin, and get to laugh, feel outraged,  and feel bad with them. It is a very intimate podcast, and this is part of what makes it so special. If you do not like the hosts, and do not like long discussions about everything and nothing, then this podcast is not for you.

I listen to many other podcasts as well, but these are three I would like to recommend at least to Danish readers of my blog. Maybe I will write something about some of the others, or maybe more about the ones already mentioned, but I have a feeling that this blog post is already long enough as it is…

P.s.: I have also started listening to Welcome to Night Vale, after Rikke and Peter recommended it. But I have not heard enough yet to have made my mind up about whether it is brilliant or horrible…
